“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back… The moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves, too… All sorts of things occur to help one that would never have occurred otherwise. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no one could have dreamed would have come their way.”
W.H. Murray, Deputy Leader of the 1951 Scottish
Expedition to climb Mt. Everest
Take a moment and become aware of any hesitancy you may have… perhaps in an area where you are ambivalent about “committing.” Is it towards a relationship? A current or new job? Exercise? Doing that art endeavor you have longed to do? Having children or moving to a place that could restore your soul and well-being? Oftentimes we become “naysayers” to that next step; we stay frozen, and yet the power of committing can be the linchpin to open us up to more answers, more possibilities, more potential.
To start:
- Identify one area where you are fearful of commitment.
- Name for yourself what is the worst that could happen “if I go all in.
- Breathe and imagine yourself being fully immersed in this commitment.
- Take stock of the freedom you feel by no longer holding back.
- Remind yourself as you make the choice to commit, you can always make a different choice and commitment.
By letting go of control and making a choice to commit yourself fully, you can create opportunities rather than staying comfortable with only what is familiar! More to gain than to lose.
