What is Marriage Counseling?

Marriage counseling, also called couples therapy, is a type of psychotherapy. Marriage counseling helps couples of all types recognize and resolve conflicts that arise in their relationships. It is an effective means of either improving a relationship or of making the difficult decision to end a relationship. Couples therapy is a dedicated, regular time and place to explore your relationship with an impartial, objective and highly trained third party. The marriage counselors on our staff have special training in interpersonal therapies and are clinical members and supervisors in The American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT).

What Issues Does Couples Therapy Help?

There are many issues in a relationship that couples therapy can help to resolve. Some specific areas where we can help include:
– Anger/ Fighting that escalates to uncomfortable levels
– Chronic, repetitive arguments that never get resolved
– Parenting issues and conflicting philosophies and ideas about parenting
– Infidelity issuesWith the help of a skilled couples therapist, couples can learn new, more effective ways of speaking and listening to one another. And couples will learn to recognize what makes things go wrong in the relationship, how both members of a couple feed into these destructive patterns and ultimately how to create an intimate and loving relationship. During this time, which usually lasts 1-3 sessions, therapist hears about what is bringing the person in for help and together the therapist and client discuss a treatment plan.

How Do I Know If I Need Marriage Counseling?

All relationships go through difficult periods. But if you find that such a difficult period goes on and on, and you are continuing to have the same disagreements and reaching the same impasses over and over, then it is time to give us a call. Studies show that couples typically wait to seek professional help about 6 years from first sensing that something is wrong in the relationship. The quicker you reach out for help, the more possible it will be for a therapist to help you create a healthier, more satisfying relationship. It is never too early to call us.

How Long Does It Take And How Much Does It Cost?

We recommend a commitment of 3-6 months, generally meeting with a therapist once per week. Fees are set with the therapist either on the phone or at the initial meeting. READY TO START? Call the Counseling Center to arrange an appointment at (914) 793-3388.
