Marriage and Couples Psychotherapy

Marriage and couples Psychotherapy
When a relationship is experiencing difficulty, marriage and couples psychotherapy can help.

Couples therapy helps partners in all types of relationships recognize and resolve conflicts. It is an effective means of either improving a relationship or, sometimes, of making the difficult decision to end a relationship. Couples therapy is a dedicated time and place to explore your relationship with an impartial, objective and highly trained third party. Our Couples Counseling in Westchester, whether in person or virtual, have trained therapists specializing in interpersonal therapies, communication skills and addiction as it arises in coupledom. Some of the couples therapists on our staff are clinical members or supervisors in The American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT).

WHAT ISSUES DOES COUPLES THERAPY address?
There are many issues in a relationship that couples therapy can help to resolve.

Some specific areas where we can help include:

- Anger/ Fighting that escalates to uncomfortable levels

- Chronic, repetitive arguments that never get resolved

- Parenting issues and conflicting ideas about child-rearing

- Intimacy issues
-Infidelity and trust issues
-Pre-marriage counseling and relational “tune-ups”

With the help of a skilled couples therapist, couples can learn new, more effective ways of speaking and listening to one another. They will learn to recognize what makes things go wrong in the relationship, how both partners feed into these destructive patterns and ultimately how to create a more intimate and loving relationship. During assessment, which usually lasts 1-3 sessions, the therapist will gain an understanding of the couple’s goals and dynamics to form a collaborative treatment plan.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED COUPLES Therapy?

All relationships go through difficult periods. But if you find that a period of tension or disconnection goes on and on, and you are continuing to have the same disagreements and reaching the same impasses over and over, then it is time to give us a call. Studies show that couples typically wait to seek professional help about 6 years from first sensing that something is wrong in the relationship. The quicker you reach out for help, the more possible it will be for a therapist to help you unwind from negative patterns and create a healthier, more satisfying relationship. It is never too early to call us.

How Long Does It Take And How Much Does It Cost?

We recommend a commitment of 3-6 months, generally meeting with a therapist once per week. Fees are set with the therapist either on the phone or at the initial meeting. READY TO START? Call the Counseling Center to arrange an appointment at (914) 793-3388.
